Harry Redknapp is always one to give a cheeky comment or two to the press boys, ‘Arry plays the game and knows the buttons to press but when discussing his latest transfer moves, one name came out of left-field.

There have been some strange moves this transfer window but we nearly choked on our Coco Pops when we saw the name of Peter Sutcliffe (aye, we’re not buying that name change thing he wanted after the conviction), The Yorkshire Ripper, in association with Spurs.

One thing that would count against the signing of Sutcliffe would be his lack of experience in the top flight and indeed, the Champions League. Spurs have an ideal opportunity to press on this season and need to be bringing in players that will strengthen their top four credentials.

On the positive side, Sutcliffe would probably be able to play on a more regular basis than Ledley King or Johnny Woodgate. That aside, and when you consider all that unpleasantness with females, it would be best for everyone concerned if Redknapp doesn’t take a chance on the 64 year old.

Mind you, if Spurs did confirm their interest, it would probably galvanise Manchester City to make a late bid for Sutcliffe.

Then again, it’s not really as if City need any more defensive midfielders.

On a slightly less traumatic note, Spurs have swooped to bring ex Arsenal greeting faced captain William Gallas to White Hart Lane. This now sees Gallas at his third London club after spells with Chelsea and the Gooners and no matter where Gallas has been, he has managed himself and his opinions brilliantly.

No wait, he has portrayed himself to be a git at every opportunity with the thinly veiled threat (obviously later denied) to score an own-goal if played by Chelsea being one of his lowest moments.

It will be a hard one for Spurs fans – one of their best moments in recent years came with the sight of Gallas sitting on the half-way line in a huff, angry at the realisation that Arsenal had blown their best chance of being in a title race.

That’s all change now as the Tottenham fans will have to get right behind their new man….but there is always room for redemption. After all…..Peter Sutcliffe did say he was sorry (its at the end of this video…but its worth watching!!)

When talking about footballers, the comment that their brains are located in their feet tends to be a backhanded compliment. On recent form, you could probably argue that Peter Crouch’s brain lies elsewhere than his feet but they certainly don’t reside in his head.

It has to be said that Crouchy has been punching considerably above his weight with Abbey Clancy but it seems as though the English hit-man doesn’t have the brains to realise he was on to a good thing. Which has led to him carrying out a lot of begging and pleading and no doubt a whole lot of spending!

Anyways, TV funnyman Robert Florence has penned a poem about Crouch, which you can read below:

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has made it clear that he would like to keep Argentine international Javier Mascherano at Anfield but the player has suggested it would be best to move on. That’s the nature of football and with Barcelona sniffing around the player; it looks as though he will be on his way from Merseyside soon.

The current chat and rumours suggest that a fee of around 15 million euros and Alexander Hleb will be coming to Liverpool to take Mascherano to the Camp Nou.

Obviously the two players are not involved in a like for like swap but we’re not sure if Hleb is what Liverpool need this season. Hleb has always struck us as a luxury player and not one you would turn to week in and week out to fire your team.

There is no shame in not becoming a first team regular at Barcelona, Hleb was a strong part of the squad that won the treble and he has definitely been a major player for Stuttgart where he spent last season on loan.

With Joe Cole coming to Anfield for free, Liverpool have already picked up a player that create goals out of nothing but can’t turn it on every single game. The fact that these wingers / attacking midfielders tend to flit in and out of games and struggle for consistency is perhaps a reason to have two of them in your squad but we’re not sure if Liverpool would be better off with the cash to enable them to strengthen other areas.

A lot depends on any proposed takeover of Liverpool but if this does not take place before the close of the window, it may not provide any great assistance to Roy Hodgson. Depending on the flexibility of Barcelona (who have their own financial concerns), straight cash may be a better option than the choice of cash plus Hleb.

In the summer transfer window, it needs one big move to take place to start a cycle that sees a lot of players moving in major deals. Barcelona have kicked it all off early by signing David Villa and this is sure to have repercussions for the existing forwards at the Camp Nou.

Most under threat will be Zlatan Ibrahomivic who despite notching over twenty goals, including a winner against Real Madrid, has not become a fan favourite. Although the silky style of Barcelona is evident, the team works extremely hard and at times, youngsters like Bojan or Pedro offer a bit more than the Swedish striker.

This means he may be on his way out of Spain after just one season. After having played for Juventus and Inter Milan, a move to England may be the preferred option for the striker and Chelsea showed an interest in him last season.

Carlo Ancelotti knows all about the forward from the Milan derbies and time in Serie A and perhaps sees him as a foil to Didider Drogba. Chelsea are still in contract talks with Anelka and it may be that the arrival of Ibrahimovic lessens the need to keep the Frenchman.

Various newspaper reports are also citing the fact that Roman Abramovic is looking to make a marquee signing this summer and of course, the Champions League remains on his wish-list.

Newspapers are also linking Manchester United with an interest in the player but we just cant see it. Ibra doesn’t strike us as the type of player that Alex Ferguson would utilise, especially not after the flop of Dimitar Berbatov. You can also throw in the financial problems that United have.

Manchester City of course would be an entirely different matter, the money would be no issue but would Ibrahimovic settle for Europa League action?

The English squad should be focussing on the task ahead for the World Cup but it is inevitable that club issues will be in some players minds.

The past season has been a terrible year for Liverpool and Stevie Gerrard has suffered more than most. Being a Liverpudlian, he knows how the Liverpool fans feel and the stress of a poor season will be weighing on his mind.

There is growing talk that the midfielders relations with boss Rafa Benitez has become strained and a parting of the ways may be looming.

There will be no shortage of clubs interested in Gerrard but you have to wonder where he will be likely to end up? Chelsea were strongly rumoured to be interested in the player a few years back but Gerrard decided to stay at Anfield in the hope of Liverpool regaining the league title.

Whether Chelsea are still interested in the player or Gerrard fancies a move to London remains to be seen.

If there is a top class player on the market, you know that Manchester City will be interested and they could certainly afford the fee Liverpool would want but would Gerrard want to go to City?

A move to Manchester, with the rivalries between Liverpool and Manchester may not make this switch too appealing to the player so you could probably rule that out.

Therefore, a move abroad could be of interest to Gerrard but with Barcelona talking about bringing Cesc Fabregas back to the Camp Nou, you can’t think the Catalan club would have an interest.

Real Madrid may be looking for a new boss again and if the rumours about Jose Mourinho are true, his knowledge and admiration for the player may see a bid coming from the Spanish capital.

It has been a disastrous day for Manchester United with Chelsea’s romp at Stamford Bridge preventing them from winning the league. However, it looks as though it could be a very bad day for England fans as well with the news that Wayne Rooney limped out of the action with what looks like a groin injury.

At the moment, there is no way of knowing how serious the injury to Rooney is but the fact that the player has remained on the bench as opposed to moving up the tunnel for further treatment should give some hope that the injury is not serious.

All of England’s hopes for South African glory have been heaped on Wayne Rooney’s shoulders, which is a big task for any player. With Steven Gerrard dropping in form and the first choice centre half pairing of John Terry and Rio Ferdinand looking shaky, England are not in great shape for the forthcoming tournament.

Fabio Capello will be praying that the Premier League’s second top goalscorer will be fit for the start of the tournament but Rooney has been picking up a lot of injuries of late. It may be best for the player to get a rest but with the country relying on him, there is no real time or opportunity to let Wayne Rooney get back to full fitness.

Going into the home match versus Wigan, Chelsea were making the right noises about treating their opponents with respect and were bigging up the challenge that Wigan would pose. In the end, it didn’t quite work that way but you won’t see or hear any Chelsea fans complaining. The London club demolished their opponents to clinch the title and ruin any hope of Manchester United taking the title for the fourth consecutive Premier League title.

Ever since the home defeat to Manchester City, Chelsea have developed a steely edge with respect to taking the Premier League title and after hitting seven at home to Stoke, they went goal crazy against Wigan on the final day.

There were tantrums from Didier Drogba in the first half when regular penalty taker Frank Lampard took the spot kick to give the Champions elect a two goal lead. This penalty award also saw Gary ‘Heid’ Caldwell dismissed, and Caldwell took any hope of Manchester United winning the title. It is the Scottish players fourth red card of the season, and was his second for Wigan Athletic. Caldwell had earlier been red carded for Scotland against Norway and for former club Celtic against Hearts.

All praise must go to Carlo Ancelotti for winning the league in his first season in English football and of course, they haven’t finished yet. Chelsea won’t want to celebrate too hard because they have the FA Cup final against Portmsouth to come on the 15th of May. A victory at Wembley will seal the double for the Blues and no doubt please Roman Abramovich very much.

There are some people who say that once you turn your back on your country, that should be you finished. However, there are many more people who are a touch more pragmatic about the situation and realise that people can make mistakes or change their minds.

There are rumours surfacing that Jamie Carragher has been having secret talks with the England camp about breaking his self-imposed exile from the national team and could be in with a shout of making the squad for the World Cup.

John Terry and Rio Ferdinand have been the mainstays of the centre of the English defence and their dominance made up part of the many reasons why Jamie Carragher decided he would rather than focus on his Liverpool career. With Liverpool having a nightmare season, Carragher perhaps wants to end the summer having won a few games in a row!

Terry and Ferdinand have had questionable seasons but the same has to be said for Carragher.

Everyone knows that things haven’t clicked for Liverpool this season with even key men like Gerrard and Carragher turning in many poor performances. Choosing Carragher is not choosing a man in form but it is choosing someone who has been there, seen it and done it. At times, in a short tournament like the World Cup, experience can count for much more than form.

What it does to the morale of other centre halfs who may have considered themselves to be in the running for the squad remains to be seen. It would be pretty hard to take if you have performed well all season only to find someone who removed themselves from the squad to walk in at the last minute and take your place.

Then again, it is not as if there are many candidates who have to be there. There are plenty of centre halfs who are in with a shout but none should be guaranteed a place.

If Jamie Carragher does return to the England squad, it is sure to lead to a great time to his friends and the rumour mongers. Who can forget the tales emanating from the House of Scouse at the 2006 World Cup? It may well be that John Terry’s mum is looking out her passport as we speak!

Being a manager is not just about picking the right eleven players or getting your tactics right. Ensuring that your players are in the right mental frame of mind for a match and are bale to give their best is where many managers excel. Harry Redknapp has a reputation as being a bit of a wheeler dealer but there is no doubt he can speak the players language.

Tottenham Hotspur currently hold a one point lead over City in the race for fourth place and if Spurs can win tonight, they are in the qualifying rounds for the Champions League for the first time in their history. Spurs have spent big but not as much as Manchester City have, this allows Redknapp to put the pressure on the hosts for tonight’s game.

All the football world knows the sort of money that has been spent at City and if the club wants to take the next step, they need to make the Champions League. Not because of the money but because of the higher calibre of players they will be able to buy. The Champions League is where its at and if City want to win the league some point soon, they will need the quality of players that the Champions League helps to bring.

However, there is pressure on Spurs to make the Champions League this season, regardless of what Harry says. City are only liable to get stronger meaning this may be the best opportunity Spurs get of making it. Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal still look a class apart from the rest of the league, meaning that there is only one Champions League place up for grabs.

If Spurs have a poorer season, if City improve, if Everton avoid injuries and so many more ifs, Tottenham Hostpur may not have this chance again to be in with the big boys.

Harry knows this…and he knows there is pressure on his own players. He has did well to try and deflect as much of it as possible before kick-off.

In the end , it was a comfortable victory for Chelsea at Anfield and one which leaves the club on the brink of their third English Premier League title.

The first goal was a personal disaster for Stevie Gerrard who never looked up in passing the ball back to Pepe Reina. That is the last thing you want to do when Didier Drogba is lurking with intent and he easily skipped past the Spanish goalkeeper to put the visitors one nil up.

Frank Lampard grabbed the second goal of the game to put the Blues on easy street and Liverpool never looked like getting back in it.

This wasn’t a disaster for Liverpool fans who were probably as placated as you will ever see a home crowd at 2-0 down.

Attention turns to the Stadium of Light where Manchester United need to win to have any hope of winning their 19th domestic title this season.

If the Red Devils do grab all three points at Sunderland, Chelsea will have to do the business against Wigan at Stamford Bridge next Sunday.

You can never be certain until it is all over but you have to say that things are looking pretty good for Chelsea.
