Harry Redknapp is always one to give a cheeky comment or two to the press boys, ‘Arry plays the game and knows the buttons to press but when discussing his latest transfer moves, one name came out of left-field.

There have been some strange moves this transfer window but we nearly choked on our Coco Pops when we saw the name of Peter Sutcliffe (aye, we’re not buying that name change thing he wanted after the conviction), The Yorkshire Ripper, in association with Spurs.

One thing that would count against the signing of Sutcliffe would be his lack of experience in the top flight and indeed, the Champions League. Spurs have an ideal opportunity to press on this season and need to be bringing in players that will strengthen their top four credentials.

On the positive side, Sutcliffe would probably be able to play on a more regular basis than Ledley King or Johnny Woodgate. That aside, and when you consider all that unpleasantness with females, it would be best for everyone concerned if Redknapp doesn’t take a chance on the 64 year old.

Mind you, if Spurs did confirm their interest, it would probably galvanise Manchester City to make a late bid for Sutcliffe.

Then again, it’s not really as if City need any more defensive midfielders.

On a slightly less traumatic note, Spurs have swooped to bring ex Arsenal greeting faced captain William Gallas to White Hart Lane. This now sees Gallas at his third London club after spells with Chelsea and the Gooners and no matter where Gallas has been, he has managed himself and his opinions brilliantly.

No wait, he has portrayed himself to be a git at every opportunity with the thinly veiled threat (obviously later denied) to score an own-goal if played by Chelsea being one of his lowest moments.

It will be a hard one for Spurs fans – one of their best moments in recent years came with the sight of Gallas sitting on the half-way line in a huff, angry at the realisation that Arsenal had blown their best chance of being in a title race.

That’s all change now as the Tottenham fans will have to get right behind their new man….but there is always room for redemption. After all…..Peter Sutcliffe did say he was sorry (its at the end of this video…but its worth watching!!)

Sutcliffe apologises

When talking about footballers, the comment that their brains are located in their feet tends to be a backhanded compliment. On recent form, you could probably argue that Peter Crouch’s brain lies elsewhere than his feet but they certainly don’t reside in his head.

It has to be said that Crouchy has been punching considerably above his weight with Abbey Clancy but it seems as though the English hit-man doesn’t have the brains to realise he was on to a good thing. Which has led to him carrying out a lot of begging and pleading and no doubt a whole lot of spending!

Anyways, TV funnyman Robert Florence has penned a poem about Crouch, which you can read below:

Hamburger and Steak

“What have you done?”
That is the cry you hear
She is beautiful
And he looks like a golf club with an overbite
Her name is Abbey
And just like Westminster Abbey
Is better
When an organ’s inside

That’s what they say
It’s not me being sexist
It’s them that say that
(The Scientologists)
Oh, Peter.
You look like a grief-stricken lamp-post
Why have hamburger
When you have steak at home?

Admittedly, the hamburger is younger
And has bigger tits.
That’s what they say
(The Scientologists)
And admittedly, a steak that lets you
do it up the arse
would be pretty rare.
Maybe medium-rare.

Fool, go to Abbey on your knees
Which would make you only 8 foot 2
And beg for her mercy
That Liverpudlian Angel
That goddess of the North
And ask her for forgiveness
And maybe ask her if she’s up for a threesome
Actually, no
Strike that
Just say sorry
In giraffe language

You look like a tapeworm in a suit
You look like a mobile phone mast with a toupee
You look like a steamrollered E.T.
I stood a bread bin on its side
And it looked like your face
So I shoved my boot into it
It made me feel a bit better
But all my bread is fucked
You are very selfish

“On ‘is ‘ead!”
They shout.
(The fans*)
Yes, ON ‘IS ‘EAD.
ON ‘IS OWN ‘EAD BE IT.
Get it?
THE END

*The Scientologists

We like that poem, it maybe says everything we think about what Crouchy has done….

If you want to read more of Robert’s work and see what he and his writing partner Iain Connell are up to, you can visit their website here!

Being a manager is not just about picking the right eleven players or getting your tactics right. Ensuring that your players are in the right mental frame of mind for a match and are bale to give their best is where many managers excel. Harry Redknapp has a reputation as being a bit of a wheeler dealer but there is no doubt he can speak the players language.

Tottenham Hotspur currently hold a one point lead over City in the race for fourth place and if Spurs can win tonight, they are in the qualifying rounds for the Champions League for the first time in their history. Spurs have spent big but not as much as Manchester City have, this allows Redknapp to put the pressure on the hosts for tonight’s game.

All the football world knows the sort of money that has been spent at City and if the club wants to take the next step, they need to make the Champions League. Not because of the money but because of the higher calibre of players they will be able to buy. The Champions League is where its at and if City want to win the league some point soon, they will need the quality of players that the Champions League helps to bring.

However, there is pressure on Spurs to make the Champions League this season, regardless of what Harry says. City are only liable to get stronger meaning this may be the best opportunity Spurs get of making it. Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal still look a class apart from the rest of the league, meaning that there is only one Champions League place up for grabs.

If Spurs have a poorer season, if City improve, if Everton avoid injuries and so many more ifs, Tottenham Hostpur may not have this chance again to be in with the big boys.

Harry knows this…and he knows there is pressure on his own players. He has did well to try and deflect as much of it as possible before kick-off.

Who do you think will triumph tonight?

Some of the early weekend kick-offs take a while to get properly started and this game is a perfect example of that. The final half an hour of the Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur game was phenomenal, both sides tearing at each other as though their season depended on a positive outcome.

It did, which makes the opening hour slightly disappointing but with an ending like that, it would be churlish to moan too much.

United took the lead through a Ryan Giggs penalty and at that point, no one could complain at the home side being in the lead. Spurs simply never turned up and their performance was a pale shadow when compared to their victories over Arsenal and Chelsea of late.

However, the opening goal and the arrival of Aaron Lennon revitalised Spurs and the London club came to life. They shocked Old Trafford and threatened to kill off United’s title hopes when Ledley King powered home from a corner to make it 1-1.

At this point, both teams were slugging it out for the crucial third goal and it fell to United with Nani cooly chipping it over Gomes to fire United to the top of the league.

The result was put beyond doubt when United were given another penalty which the Welsh Wizard duly dispatched for his second goal of the game. United sit top of the table, a position they are more than used to and now just have the two games to get through.

The goal difference is now down to 1 but Chelsea have the game in hand to account for the two points they sit behind United. Today was a crucial win for United but the league is still in Chelsea’s hands, if they do their job, they’ll be safe.

United fans, confident of taking the league for the fourth year in a row?

We all know that the two recent Tottenham Hotspur home wins have been massive for Manchester United and the title run-in. Not only did they see Chelsea and Arsenal drop points, it may help puncture Manchester City’s bid for the top four.

At the moment though, the best thing about these results is that they will have focused the minds of the Man United players of how important today’s Old Trafford clash is. Spurs have a diabolical record at United’s home ground in recent years, without a victory in 21 years!

Last season, Spurs held a 2-0 lead at Old Trafford but even that was not enough as the Red Devils roared back in the second half to win 5-2. As usual, opposition fans will say that United got the rub of the green from the ref that day but when you are playing a team with such attacking power, the game is never really over.

And if Spurs needed any further reminder of that, the late late show which defeated Manchester City last weekend in the derby should be reverberating in the minds of the Spurs camp. When it gets to the business end of the season, there are few teams in the world that are as effective as Manchester United.

For us, the advantage for the run-in still lies with Chelsea and United HAVE to win all three games. There is no reason why United cannot pick up all 9 points available to them but when they are also reliant on Chelsea dropping points, with the Blues also have three winnable games, it remains out of their hands.

If Spurs were to grab anything at Old Trafford, it would be take a miracle for United to win the league…so it is all set up for a lunchtime cracker in Manchester.

Two penalties, a fallen giant and the player of the moment grabbing two goals. The FA Cup match between Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United was everything that a football fan could ever want from the famous competition.

Spurs are very much still in the hunt for fourth place and that Champions League qualification spot but they aren’t going to turn down the chance of a May trip to Wembley. They may rather wait until the following season because everyone knows that it’s lucky for Spurs when the year ends in 1…but get it whilst its going is a good motto for life.

Spurs may have thought they were due to open the scoring from the spot but yet again, Jermain Defoe was the player to miss. The forward can be deadly in front of goal but his touch quite often goes missing from the 12 yard spot. With the World Cup looming, English fans will be hoping that other players will be ready to step up to the plate when it matters.

Spurs weren’t to be denied and took the lead on the stroke of half-time. There was a stroke of good fortune about Peter Crouch’s goal but the tall forward reacted quickly to the rebound that came at him with pace.

This half-time lead should have been the catalyst for Spurs to ease to victory but Leeds came roaring back. Within 7 minutes of the second half, Beckford was on hand to bundle the ball home and have the Leeds fans dreaming of another Premier League scalp.

If Beckford is the man of the moment, Roman Pavlyuchenko has been the forgotten man of the season but he looked to have grabbed the winner with his strike on 75 minutes. Some lucky Spurs fans was the lucky recipient of the players gloves as he threw them into the crowd but Spurs were unable to hold onto their passage into the next round.

It was deep deep into injury time when Matt Dawson put a ludicrous challenge in that the referee decided was worthy of a penalty kick. Spurs fans will argue that Dawson took some of the ball but as a defender, you should not be taking that sort of risk in injury time.

Beckford picked himself up and fired the ball past the despairing dive of Gomes to draw Leeds level and earn his side a replay on the 2nd of February.

Leeds will think that they have every chance of progressing at Elland Road and it should be a fascinating match once again.

Leeds fans, can you get past Spurs?
