Shelvey heading to Anfield in a £1.7m deal?
The most important thing about the breaking news is that Charlton midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is heading to Liverpool to discuss a move and have a medical. This will capture the attention of fans who are always looking for new signings.
What may be of longer term interest is the fact that the two clubs are said to be discussing creating a form of partnership which will see a player development link created. The reason for top clubs to create this sort of partnership is because they believe they will create a good learning place for young players and the progress of Shelvey would suggest that Charlton have a knack of bringing on young players.
The 18 year old midfielder made his debut for Charlton two seasons ago but he has clearly caught the eye of many people and if the move to Liverpool goes through, it will represent a massive step-up for the player.
However, the praise for the player suggests he will be able to live up to the billing, his current boss had this to say about the player; “He’s an excellent prospect – I haven’t seen a better 17-year-old in the country”
No one expects Shelvey to head straight into the Liverpool team but the fact the Anfield club are looking to spend the money on a project obviously indicates some level of faith in the player.
This is the sort of signing that clubs can make without any great input from the manager. For anyone looking for clues about the future of Rafa Benitez, there probably isn’t too much to find in this move but that’s not to say the Spaniard hasn’t given the move the final veto or approval.
Is the best move for the player at this stage in his career?
