Benitez makes another outlandish comment
No matter what happens to Rafa, he will always have Istanbul. This is just as well because if he was solely judged on domestic football, he would likely be out of a job at the moment.
There is the aspect whether Liverpool can afford to sack the manager but the breaking point for many Liverpool fans is coming. It is not so much the draws and defeats but the manner of play.
Liverpool were impressive in the opening 45 minutes against Arsenal but you had the impression that Arsenal were playing poorly. It was role reversal in the second half and Liverpool can have no complaints.
That result may have been enough to keep a few Scouse heads down but you cant keep Benitez away from some chest beating. It may be just his way of defending his players but the comments from Benitez are a bit incredulous to say the least.
The beleaguered Spanish manager said;
“I have to have confidence in my team and I am sure we can do it because I know we are better than the team you are seeing on the pitch.” “I can guarantee we will finish in the top four.”
As for the last comment, Benitez was able to guarantee Liverpool a top four finish in their Champions League group but that is about all you can say.
At this moment in time, there is nothing about Liverpool that will make them a better bet to finish top four than Aston Villa, Spurs or Manchester City.
In fact, at the time of this article, Liverpool sit behind Birmingham City in the table. Okay, Alex McLeish’s team has played a game extra but for Liverpool to be behind the Brummies 16 games into the season is an embarrassment.
Then again, Birmingham have won 5 games in a row. Benitez would kill for that at the moment.
There is a lot of football to be played before Rafa Benitez’s claim can be proved right or wrong but at this moment, the Spaniard may be eating his words.
Will Rafa Benitez still be in charge at the end of the season?
