Here’s one for the conspiracy theory lovers!

Oh dear, amidst a backdrop of fears that Liverpool would lie down to Chelsea in order to prevent Manchester United winning the league, the game was always going to be under close scrutiny.

Liverpool were playing very well up to the 30-odd minute mark even though their shooting boots weren’t on. Manchester United fans watching on would have been suitably content that the Anfield team were doing their bit. That all changed in the blink of an eye.

We are not saying for one second that Stevie Gerrard deliberately played in Dider Drogba to open the scoring, certainly not. It was a split second decision from Gerrard and Drogba was not in his line of vision when he played the back-pass. In short, it was just a terrible error.

That said though, it is not going to make life any easier for United fans as they consider the chances of winning the league for a fourth time in a row to be slipping away.

The goal has rocked Liverpool and as the match lurches towards half-time, Liverpool look to have lost their shape and discipline. Chelsea could have punished them even further but Lampard and Anelka were unable to apply the finishing touch would could have put Chelsea firmly in the driving seat.

There is still a long way to go at Anfield but that 1-0 lead gives the team from Stamford Bridge a huge advantage in the race for the EPL title.

Will Stevie G be gutted about that goal?
