The news that the Brazillian referee Carlos Simon for the England v USA game has spent time learning English swear words has been taken by the English media as a definite sign that the world is against England in their bid to win a second World Cup.

A booking and post-match warning for Wayne Rooney for swearing against the Platinum All-Stars has sent the nation into a tizzy, with concerns about Rooney’s temperament reaching boiling point and perhaps exploding over. It seems as though there is always a desire to have a scapegoat in waiting for any English defeat and the fears that Rooney may get sent off is building along that route.

Now…let’s all take a moment to step back – the match is England versus the United States of America. There is a lot of water between the two countries but there is (nearly) a common language.

They use sidewalk, we use pavement.
They use color, we use colour.

And so on and so forth but you know something, we both use near enough the same swear words.

If you were a referee taking charge of a match between two foreign nations which have a common language, would you not take some time to pick up on the language that you might find on the football field?

At the moment, we are feeling sorry for poor old Tim Howard in the nets for the USA with his tourettes. Surely he is at more risk than Wayne Rooney if a referee knows the words but doesn’t understand the context?

That’s a bit light-hearted but in reality, the uproar and fury that has met the news this ref has taken the time to do some research prior to the game indicates how World Cup fever can affect people!

Lets just relax and not put any further pressure on our big game players…..the refs are out there to do the job and if he deserves castigation, lets do it post-match…not prior to a ball being kicked!

Before kick-off, all the talk was of Manchester United needing a win to go top of the league but the fans opinion was not fully focused on the on-field action. The recent board room moves by the Glazers has certainly not bonded the fans to the owners and the ‘Glazers Out’ campaign is starting to build a bit of momentum.

United have dominated many of their opponents this season but have sometimes struggled to get the goals their play has deserved. With Wayne Rooney opening the scoring on 8 minutes, the Old Trafford crowd sat back and expected a deluge of goals.

No more came in the first half and for a long period of the second, none followed either.

United were always pushing and prodding but Boaz Myhill was maintaining his strong run of form. 1-0 is never a comfortable score line and Alex Ferguson would have been looking nervously at his watch as the game entered the last ten minutes.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man.

Rooney secured all the points in the 82nd minute with a drive and the main man completed his hat-trick with a header from a Nani cross.

This should have been enough for everyone but Rooney still found time for another and his fourth goal of the game sent the United fans home happy with the performance, if not the financial status of the club.

The English Premier League now has the fantastic situation where two points separate the top three sides. United are on 50 points and Arsenal and Chelsea are on 48 points. What is also of interest is the fact that the three teams have a goal difference of 34.

Who is your tip for the top?

Manchester United were way below their best at the KC Stadium but when you have a world class talent like Wayne Rooney, anything can happen.

As so often happens, Hull would have thought they were doing well to get to half-time still equal when Rooney popped up to break the deadlock. The striker has been out of sorts in recent weeks as United have struggled but he is always likely to pop up when Alex Ferguson needs him most.

Where Rooney isn’t the best though is with defensive duties and it was his error that allowed Hull to get back into the match. A short back-pass caused panic in the United box eventually leading to Rafael bundling over Jozy Altidore.

The scores were level as Fagan struck the ball home and for a while, it looked as though Fagan was going to be responsible for Hull picking the pockets of United.

Just when Phil Brown was contemplating congratulating himself on a point with a stint at the tanning salon, Rooney was instrumental in United regaining the lead. He took a pass from Ryan Giggs and drove the ball across goal where Andy Dawson could only turn the ball into his own net.

Rooney was again involved a few minutes later when Dimitar Berbatov gave United a clear lead that saw the Red Devils cut Chelsea’s lead at the top of the table to two points.

The teams at the top are not finding form at the moment but winning when playing badly is the mark of Champions.

United fans, can you see the signs of improvement?
