If the question is name a striker that is not as good as Craig Bellamy, Peter Crouch or Robbie Keane, then yes, Kenwyne Jones may well be the answer.

The thing is though, all of the first three players were sold by Rafa Benitez but the rumour mill seems to suggest that Jones is the player Benitez wants to bring in to Anfield.

Don’t get us wrong, strikers can very much be horses for courses and Jones is a different type of player from all of the three mentioned. There may be similarities to Crouch with respect to aerial ability but Jones has more muscle about him.

With Fernando Torres out injured and Liverpool toiling, there is a need for new recruits and although money is sparse at Anfield, a gamble may be required to keep the club in the hunt for a Champions League place.

If Liverpool finish outside of the top four, it could have serious financial consequences for the club, so a financial hit now may prevent a larger one from occurring next season.

Sunderland boss, and ex Manchester United captain, Steve Bruce would not be rushing to do Liverpool a favour at any time but the way that this move has been discussed appears to have annoyed Bruce.

“It’s the biggest load of rubbish I’ve read in weeks.”

“I find it hugely disrespectful. The way they think they have got a chance to get him on loan is total nonsense.”

So, that appears to be the end of that one although in the English Premier League, you learn to rule nothing out. After all, money talks.

Then again, as a wise man added “but it don’t sing and dance and it don’t walk”…nor is it lying around Anfield in abundance, so Liverpool may fall short on persuading Sunderland to part with their talent.

A swap deal involving Ryan Babbel may make it of interest to both parties but whether Babbel sees a move to the Stadium of Light of interest remains to be seen. If you check out the players twitter, you’ll probably get his latest update.

If you were Rafa, would you buy Jones?

It may be Christmas Eve but football managers in the English Premier League are waiting for January to get their hands on what they want. The January transfer window is make or break for a number of clubs who need help pushing up the table or fighting for silverware.

Scoring goals can make all the difference so there are a few strikers in demand. Craig Bellamy may well be on the news again as the latest Manchester City madness has unsettled him but Kenwyne Jones appears to be in high demand.
Sunderland are said to be set to listen to offers of around £12m for the Trinidad and Tobago striker.

£12m?!?
For Kenwyne Jones?!?

This is further indication of how the major transfers in the game have pulled up the value of every player in the top flight.

Yes, on his game Jones is an excellent striker, capable of causing trouble to any defence and he may be the catalyst for any club in the run-in.

However, when was the last time he was consistently on his game?

24 goals in 76 games for Sunderland is a ratio of a goal in just over 3 games. Is this the sort of ratio that will see clubs clamouring to sign him up?

There is an argument that Jones will also be able to bring other players into the game and his height and strength could well make a few assists.

Aston Villa, Liverpool and Everton are all linked to the striker but the early indications are that Martin O’Neill is leading the chase. Villa remain in the hunt for all three domestic trophies but after last season, they may need some assistance in maintaining their form.

Liverpool are not exactly awash with cash at the moment and will likely need to sell before they can buy and Everton are even harder up for cash. With Darren Bent leading the line at the Stadium of Light, the striker may find that a move to the Midlands is right for him.
