Torres steals it for Liverpool

Neither side look deserving of a top four finish

A rather dull and uneventful game saw both sides fail to stake a claim for being deserving of a top four finish although Liverpool stole all three points at the death. Yes, the wintry conditions definitely had an impact on both sets of players but there was very little to warm the hearts of Villa Park.

Top four? Top dour more like!

Both sides could claim to have been denied a penalty kick but in all honesty, the ball was not in the penalty boxes enough for either side to claim they deserved a victory.

After Sunday’s defeat at Emirates, Martin O’Neill will be feeling very low as there was no they should have lost that match.

If you give a striker like Fernando Torres a sniff at goal he is likely to punish you in such a manner and the Irishman will have a sleepless night tonight.

It was the Spaniards 50th strike for Liverpool, in 72 games, which indicates the quality of the striker.

Tottenham Hotspur remain in fourth spot and are definitely the club in form at the moment but Aston Villa will need to go and rethink their outlook for the season.

The domestic cup competitions take centre stage in the forthcoming week for Villa but they will know Liverpool sit two points behind them now.

Maybe Rafa Benitez was right in promising a top four finish for his team.
