Late strike breaks Fife hearts

Aberdeen have had a string of high profile embarrassing Cup defeats in recent years and this would appear to have been the reason for the removal of Jimmy Calderwood from the managers seat. The Dons managed a series of impressive league finishes but with cup competitions being the only way for a club like Aberdeen to grab some silverware, it is easy to see why their fans were growing restless.
Not saying they were right to force the removal of Calderwood but in these crazy and demanding times, people want the near impossible and they want it nearly right away. This saw Mark McGhee enticed away from Motherwell in the hope of bringing a trophy back to Aberdeen.
A league cup defeat to Dundee ended the first hope of silverware and at half-time, the Scottish Cup looked to be slipping away from the Dandy Dons as well. Iain Williamson shocked the SPL side on the half-hour mark by driving home from the edge of the box.
The potential for an upset was always there but after defeating Hearts at home in the previous round, you would think that Aberdeen would have had enough to negotiate this tie.
It looked as though the Dons were on their way out and the sight of Zander Diamond leading a 5 strong attack in the dying minutes would not have been what Aberdeen fans had in mind for the day. The gung-ho approach paid dividends though as Gary McDonald scored to keep Aberdeen in the tie and broke the hearts of Raith fans everywhere.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown is having enough problems with his day job these days so a defeat of an SPL team would have given him some respite but it was Mark McGhee who got the rub of good fortune. Don’t be surprised if McGhee refers to McDonald as Darling for saving the Don’s season and earning the top flight club a replay.
Aberdeen had a similar situation last season against another Fife team when Dunfermline managed to oust them at pittodrie on penalties so it is not job done for the Dons but they can rest a bit easy for the next few days.
Will Aberdeen finish the job at Pittodrie?
