Aberdeen and Motherwell leave it late to book Cup semi place

2 out of the 4 semi-teams on their way

The say a goal is important regardless of whether it comes in the first minute or the last minute. That is very true but when the goal puts you in the lead, it is always better to leave it as late as possible…and this is even more true in a Cup tie.

Aberdeen managers in recent years have been plagued by teams from lower divisions but it may well be that Mark McGhee has the measure of lower league opposition this season. This may not have looked the case at half-time as the Bairns held a 1-0 lead but Aberdeen grabbed the winner in a very dramatic fashion.

Captain Paul Hartley had already nodded the Dons back onto level terms after the hour mark and when Aberdeen were handed a late penalty, there was only going to be one man for the job.

An opening day hat-trick of penalties have been followed up by further successes from the 12 yard spot from Hartley and the skipper got his second of the night to put the Dons back on the road to Hampden.

It sounded a right barrel of laughs at Fir Park but you won’t be hearing any Motherwell fan complaining.

Dundee United helped the Well to a victory on Saturday with two own goals and Alan Gow’s winner was aided by the Scottish Cup holders. Prince Bauben sliced a clearance and the rebound from the post fell invitingly to Gow to put Motherwell into the League Cup semi-final.

This means there is no quick Hampden return for the Arabs but Craig Brown gets to manage the Steelmen at the ground where he led Scotland into battle on numerous occasions.

With the other two quarter final ties taking place on Wednesday and the draw due to take place on Friday, Aberdeen and Motherwell have a bit of time to wait to see who they will be facing…but getting there is the important thing!

Can the Dons or the Steelmen grab league Cup glory?

Bloody Motherwells late winner done me for £100 bangers! Grrrr

Ken McRobb (remember him from Scotsport days) was the radio reporter for Sky Sports News, his report in the 85th minute was that it was a certainty to go to extra time, bloody jonah!

The BBC Live update was saying from about 20 mins they expected extra time and pens such was the lack of action.

Another great result for Broon and Knox though…another big let-down for Houston.

Suppose the story of the other game was one of the Riccarton 3 grabbing 2 goal to put the other 1 out. There you go, a Ted Rodgers and Dusty Bin appraisal of last nights Pittodrie action.

Mission control was in touch with Peter last night…..

You can fill in the blanks I’m sure!
