Airdrie United offer a unique Remembrance day programme

by WeKnowSFA

Is this for real?

With the quality of Photoshops and graphical wizardry, it can be all too easy to fall for set-up but we really are wondering about the programme issued for their match against Livingston yesterday. The poppy for Poppy Scotland and the ‘Lest We Forget’ slogan were fairly prominent but the picture used raises an eyebrow.

That isn’t a picture of British soldiers is it?

Wow….if Airdrie were making a statement about the impact of war affects all sides then fair play to them…although it’s not something you would expect to see.

The interesting thing is that it is not the first time a matchday programme has linked Airdrie to German soldiers.

A few years back, the Greenock Morton official programme made reference to the fact that the Airdrie website sold SS uniforms. As hilarious a bit of banter as that was, it probably isn’t the sort of thing that should be appearing in an official club publication.

Anyways, just putting it out there to see if anyone can shed any light on it.

  • I’m sure some of their fans have dressed in kkk outfits on matchday before, for a laugh innat? Can’t see how this would possibly offend them.

  • Im no expert, but i wouldnt be able to tell what nationality the soldiers were from that photo

There are certainly no experts here but you can tell it wasnt a uniform worn by the Allied Forces.

Airdrie United issued the following apology on their website:

I would like to unreservedly apologise for the error on our Remembrance programme which resulted in the wrong photograph being used for the front cover.

The original match sponsor for the game was Network Rail so I decided to base our Remembrance programme images on wartime trains. A number of photos were considered and when the final choice was made, the wrong image was lifted which was almost identical to the one that I had selected. Unfortunately it showed German soldiers instead of allied troops with the nurses.

As a Club, we are hugely supportive of Remembrance and have dedicated our Remembrance weekend programme to poppyscotland for a number of years. We always have a minutes silence and we also played in special strips bearing the poppy, all of which makes the programme gaffe very embarrassing.

Personally, I am devastated at this unfortunate mistake as I am immensely passionate about Remembrance and wear my poppy with pride, however you can be assured that the same mistake will never be made again.
