Video Review Panel causing concern

Another week, another matter for Celtic and the SFA.
Even the most hardened of Hoops fans will be thinking “again?” but even if you do not agree with the way that the Glasgow club seem to be continually in the press making complaints, in this instance, it is hard to argue with their sentiments.
There are many problems with video review panel in Scotland. It takes far too long for it to swing into power, far too long to announce its decision and there appears to be no consistency or transparency as to how players are referred to the panel.
Celtic boss Tony Mowbray was talking about it this week because it is likely his Danish striker Morten Rasmussen will be up in front of the panel. Kilmarnock defender Frazer Wright (the man who slapped Shunsuke Nakamura around the head to no punishment) has implored the panel to throw the book at the Celtic man.
And they probably will…and they’d be right to do so.
Video footage shows the striker elbowing the Killie man and regardless of the abuse Ra Ra Rasmussen took up to that point, you cannot react like that on a football field.
However, there have been many players this season who have elbowed their opponents, caught on camera, yet have not been hauled up in front of the panel. There have been assaults on the park in a number of games and yes, these players have avoided any punishment.
Therefore, let’s get away from the clubs involved and turn focus on the SFA.
Let’s get some transparency in the process. If an incident needs to be referred or nominated, how does this happen? Can anyone do it? Does it come from the television companies? Do Gordon Smith and George Peat sit down and decide what players and clubs shall be punished and which will get away?
We all know what Scottish football is like and having decisions shrouded in mystery and suspicion is just going to set certain parties off. If the SFA have a desire to improve the game, they will come out and tell everyone the criteria for these decisions.
If the SFA have no desire to improve the Scottish game, expect nothing to change.

same old celtic always moaning , YAWN
You still tired Jaz?….stay in bed and get some more sleep before your big Hampden day out tomorrow!
It has reached levels of the ridiculous with this video review panel. There are too many questions and not enough answers where this is concerned. Let me say Rasmussen should get punished and will but the number of equally bad off the ball incidents which are not looked at or referred are shocking and really make having a panel pointless. Sean Dillion on a yellow card kicked out at Scott Brown behind the refs back in the penalty area and nothing. There are several other incidents I could cite as review worthy as all fans doubtless could.
ON the other side of Glasgow it seems review panels are only used when they can’t get away from it – Lafferty being the one.
When they bang on about the ref having taken action with a yellow – that is the end of it, yet the can rescind a yellow for diving or a red for kicking a player in the head if they want – who reported those incidents or led a campaign to get players off the hook?
And how can all these thingsbe done quickly in some cases and in months in others.
Scott McDonald was hauled in front of a panel when
a. The ref saw a studs first challenge on Wilkie and dealt with the incident – no action
b. Wilkie himself said no malice
Yet it was referred – by whom? We don’t know.
Weir made an identical challenge on McDonald yards away from the referee in the first OF game this season and no panel was called into play. Lafferty’s assaults on Zheng Zhi and McManus were also not considered panel worthy.
Lee McCulloch on an almost weekly basis goes through opponents or elbows them (most notably against Aberdeen in September/Ocotber time) and no censure or video review his assault on the Hearts Goalie in the second game of the season (in the midrift) saw no need for a panel.
With the SFA a heavily pro – Rangers organisation from top to bottom these days what does anyone expect. But of course Celtic fans are all paranoid – with a system like this no wonder.
Highly selective, no clear rules, no transparency – it is not paranoia, it is rather a clear frustration with a system which is not fit for purpose and which on the surface only punishes one club.
The of course you get the nonsense of refs reviewing their own decisions – are they really going to say sorry i got it wrong every time they make an “honest mistake”? It does not benefit them to do so so they won’t.
Said it before, this review panel is always used to target the big two. Perhaps it’s due to the intense scrutiny on both clubs in the written media, but I would love to see the facts as to how many times the old firm have fallen fowl to this. I bet it would be more than 75% of all cases.
there has to be a three man NEUTRAL panel put in place ‘agreed’ to by all premiership clubs consisting of for example~ 1 retired official..1 retired player & 1 retired manager..who change each season…whoever puts an incident up for revue has to be named by the board and the board has to explain there decision in writing… because apparently at the minute ‘the ref’ can make a decision after revue without explaining in detail why he made/upheld his decision??? silly and strange to say the least…the refs have to be accountable for their actions same as the players on the pitch..
You’re kidding, right? Celtic wrote to the SFA months ago asking for clarification of the rules on referrals to the Review Panel, and are still waiting for a reply.
The SFA is a law unto itself, and the only rule is, do whatever benefits Rangers.
The system in place is terrible and leaves itself too open to accusations of bias. Whether true or not(And my mind is set up on true) there has to be a massive overhaul with transparency the only thing to be done.
sfa video evidence hope they try and do Rasmussen.then Celtic fc can go to court over the hole cesspit that is Scottish football. so I think you,ll find this will all go away. The SFA cant afford for the courts to look at there running of the game in Scotland
YAWN lets change the rules for celtic .
Sales of tin foil in the east end of Glasgow must be through the roof at present!
The system is poor and needs to be cleared up for all concerned, but spare me the pish that it’s all Anti Celtic and Pro Rangers.
Funny how everything and everyone is against Celtic when their no winning eh?
3 titles in a row and not a peep, T-Shirts with milk, lemonnade Chocolate and the best of them all ‘No Excuses’
Oh how things have changed.
I can’t see when theragers have suffered from the VRP, so I can’t see where the “target the big two”BS comes from. I guess if you say something often enough……..
As far as I can see, renembering Artur Boruc being punished by photos supplied by the sun, the VRP can only ‘review’ what matchday video editors and sports editors choose to let the public see, and what they choose to replay, how many times, from how many angles, slo-mo, match commentators comments!
As far as I can see the laptop loyalists and their counterparts in TV dictate to the SFA who they want punished and when!!
It’s a conspiracy, it’s conspiracy, it’s a conspiracy ……. lol
Lafferty’s dive when he got the aberdeen player sent off not count now?
Best not let the facts get in the way of a good conspiracy though lol
Now how about them moon landings max?
The so called “Video Panel” is indeed called by the particular referee himself, The media or some credible person has access to call for this….. dont hold yer breath if your waiting for a reply from the SFA, I’ve asked them five times by e-mail tat same question.
remember when celtic won the title when rangers went to manchester , all the games rangers had to play in 12 days , celtics t shirts under thier strips read NO EXCUSES well were pretty skint at ibrox any chance of getting a loan of them t shirts
That is totally wrong Jaz.
When Celtic won the league at Tannadice, the t-shirts were in honour of Tommy Burns, who had passed away the previous week.
well can we borrow them anyway
i didnt mean any wrong there
The no excuses T-Shirts came after Rangers had some horrific run of injuries under the Advocaat reign.
As for the wearing of T-Shirts to celebrate the title, I would go for 53 and counting …….
anyway heres to silverware today
sir walter
Do you honestly believe this is first year Celtic are complaining about the referees, and it’s because we’re not winning?
Maybe this is the most the club has publicly criticized decisions but the sentiment of anti-Celtic in the SFA has been there as long as I’ve been alive.
In fact I believe Jock Stein said Celtic must be significantly better than Rangers in order to overcome the decisions against us.
And perhaps we’re being more vocal this year because the cheating has been ramped up even worse than before. But enjoy your tainted and hand-delivered title, I’m sure you won’t care about the manner of the win. You usually don’t.
Its a conspiracy when its Celtic compalinging – yet when SIR walter complained aboutt the linesman with the irish sounding name (Murphy) – it was legitimate. Again as has been mentioned – its a conspiracy if you and the Scottish media say it oftwen enough – but its not – 3 penaltys – 3 red cards – in ONE game not given – a legitamate goal in the second game – and well – the third game – MILLER, whats his name Bougherra – why were they not sent off – why was lafferty not even booked – why was Scott Brown sent off when the referee could not actually see the incident -and without consulting his linesman – not conspiracy I am afraid – but CHEATING – plain and simple – if this is honest mistakes – then the referees in the SPL should all be sacked – and there is a bucketful of other incidents – the Dundee United semi final – the Motherwell game – etc…. All the managers had a go – but its only Celtic that are paranoid – yeah? If you want to continue existence (because this is what it all boils down to) by cheating – well – thats the perogative of the SFL, SPL and Rangers football club – it can;’t last forever – and when you do go bye bye it will be a better time for us all. Ciao Rangers football club- rascist – bigots – and unpunished .
i do apologise about the spelling in the last message – it must be because of the Catholic schools. – lol -
We know Jaz, didnt mean to make that sound like a dig, obviously Celtic did wear NO EXCUSES tshirts at some point so you’re right to flag it up.
Perhaps in lieu of some of the buses that run past Ibrox, the tshirts could read..WAITING ON THE 54.
Not to Penilee though, you don’t want to head there!!
Oh Nevyn, have you had a bad night’s sleep? Getting up at 6am and ranting and raving like a mad man!!
I won’t go over old ground regarding major decisions that have went against Rangers particularly in the year you won the ‘Sporting Integrity SPL’ suffice to say there was enough incidents in both games at Parkhead that went Celtic’s way and had a major bearing on the destination of the title. But heh, thats life. Scotland have had their share of poor referee’s for a helluva long time now and if you seriously believe that they are all out to get Celtic, then you are badly mistaken my friend.
One point I do have to pick you up on though, the fortune ‘goal’ a blind man can see that he uses his arm to knock McGregors arm out of the way, it was a clear foul so correct decision given.
Celtic have been rather unfortunate in the Old Firm games this season, some key decisions haven’t went their way for sure. What I do love though is the fact that most Celtic fans appear to think that it’s simply the referee’s and the ‘establishment’ thats keeping them from winning the SPL, when in actual fact it’s because your team is pish. Six defeats from 30 games with 4 draws at home as well, simply is good enough for a team hoping to challenge Scotlands champions.
How many more draws and defeats would’ve came your way had the messiah not signed on loan for the second half of the season?
You keep looking away from the real problem nevyn, which is your totally incapable manager who hasn’t got a clue how to win big games.
Anyway, I’m away now to get the battle fever on for my big day at Hampden, hopefully the first part of another historic treble from the most domestically successful club in world football, let’s hope Bro Thomson (referee) carries out his duties properly and we get all the correct decisions once more.
PS Nevyn, Tesco are doing specials on tin foil, buy one get one free.
I won’t go into too many details quagmire – but what you are saying is even if the decisions had went our way (3 penalties etc..), and the decisions had went for Motherwell against Rangers, or Dundee Utd against Rangers or basically any other club against – you guessed it – Rangers – then Rangers football club would still be 10 points ahead with a game in hand?) – I love the way you say it – I am a mad man for pointing out FACTS quagmire – interesting that it is the words of a paranoid Celtic fan when we mention a small minority of the “honest mistakes” by Scottish referees – and I am only going with this year. Don’t get me wrong Celtic have been dreadful this year – but with the helping hand Rangers have been given -well – the league is pretty much a joke.
Congratulations on winning the league by nothing more than cheating.
Btw – I don’t understand your comment – I am obviously missing something about the Tesco specials?
9 men, we only need 9 men ………………..
No doubt elated with that Quagmire?
The League Cup can sometimes be overlooked unless its part of a treble but the circumstances of that victory are likely to live long for the Rangers fans that witnessed it.
Mister Ed, thats up there with the Lovenkrands winner at Hampden, St Mirren were pish but to still win the game with 9 well I didnt expect that, penalties would have been fair. We have a great winning mentality just now, it’s a special time.
And im gassed!!
