Can or should Celtic hold onto Boruc?

Contract discussions are underway

Yes, we’re a bit behind the times, the site was down yesterday but this is still a big talking point for Celtic fans. And hey, it means they don’t have to talk about the on-field action!

Yesterday afternoon saw media reports suggesting that Celtic are looking to enter contract talks with Artur Boruc. Tony Mowbray, as usual, would not be drawn directly on the details but he did state that all negotiations would be kept between the club and the goalies representatives.

It can only be good business sense to discuss contracts which are due to expire in the summer of 2011.

The Polish stopper has pulled off a number of impressive saves in his last two club matches and hopes are rising that he may be regaining a run of consistency. Of course, any goalkeeper knows they are only one mistake away from criticism; such is the nature of the position.

Any criticism aimed at Boruc nowadays appears to be due to the fact that he is not at his peak of 2007 and 08. In fact, at the end of the Euro 2008 campaign, Boruc’s stock was at its highest and many Celtic fans were pleasantly surprised he stayed with the club when surely many top European sides would have been impressed with his performances for Poland.

His form has dipped considerably since then but for some fans, he is above criticism. This is partly explained by his public image and the way he interacts with Rangers fans but equally because he has been the club’s best keeper in a number of decades.

The media will be sorry to see Boruc go as he has been an easy target for them. At times the goalkeeper has made himself an easy target and has overstepped the mark on a few occasions but equally; many people have chosen to be outraged by things which sane people would not question.

There is certainly a circus that follows Artur Boruc but you get the feeling the keeper is not always the ringmaster.

It makes perfect sense for Celtic to be entering these negotiations now with the keeper. He is out of contract at the end of the 2010/11 season so this summer is the last opportunity for Celtic to raise some funds through selling the goalkeeper.

The latest rumours at the weekend were that Boruc would be off to Germany with Ruddy, currently on loan at Motherwell, being picked up to fight it out with Zaluska for the number one jersey.

That though will be very much dependent on the contract offered to Boruc and whether he intends to stay in the fishbowl that is Glasgow.

If he signs up and stays on, Celtic fans will be delighted.

If he can’t reach agreement and leaves, most Celtic fans will be thankful for what Boruc has given them over the years and will hopefully remember so many great moments.

You get the impression that other people may feel a greater loss in losing their pantomime villain as opposed to what Celtic fans will feel.

What’s your favourite Artur Boruc moment?

Every player has there price right offer comes in for Boruc would not have any problem if Celtic accepted it , good cover in the goalkeeping dept IMHO

  2. WeKnowSFA says:

Agreed Dannybhoy, considering what Celtic paid for Boruc, they have easily had that returned already. He may not be the keeper he was a few years back but he maybe needs a new challenge for himself to get that form again.

Zaluska appears a dependable goalkeeper,. if not quite the inspirational character an on form Boruc was.

  3. Quagmire says:

On form, Boruc is a top quality keeper. He has certainly re-gained his form this year after last seasons blunders and had it not been for him, you wonder just how many more draws or defeats Celtics dodgy defence would have conceded. Even as short as last week at Falkirk, he maintained Celtics lead with a couple of top drawer saves, equally in the Old Firm game he was in top form, easily Celtics best player.

His off-field behaviour appears to have calmed down, he looks to have passed that baton onto Alan McGregor!

I think Boruc himself will think the times is right should a top club come after him and the PLC will be desperate to balance the book after two years of missing Champions League money.

If he really wants to go and a good offer is received then it’s win-win situation for all. I would be sad to see him go as, despite the odd howler which even the very best keepers have occasionally, he is unquestionably the best keeper I have seen in a Celtic jersey in my lifetime. I know, the only real opposition to that is Packy Bonner but you get my drift.

Who knows, he may even get a move to a league where he will not be on the front page of arsewipe tabloid rags for simply expressing his faith as he does before every game.

The one situation that must NOT be allowed to arise is letting his contract run down meaning he can leave for nowt next year. I can’t see that being allowed to happen.

  5. Dannybhoy says:

Dont understand why the rags had a problem with him blessing himself, the Queen does it when she goes to church & its not a problem, couple of fans said it was the masturbation sign he made to them that was a problem well lets be honest he was probably correct there pretty sure they have indulged in that pastime @ sometime in there life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Quagmire says:

Him doing the sign of the cross has never bothered me to be honest and really it’s all a bit ‘pantomime villain’ with Boruc if you ask me. there will be an element who would delve deeper I’m sure. The flag waving from the Broomloan end to the middle of the park was one of the funniest things I have ever seen at a football match, perhaps a bit of defiance since his team got beat that day but would still be crowned Champions, just felt that he made a right ‘James Hunt’ of himself which made me laugh!

  7. jazrfc says:

he made a bigger james hunt of himself coming out to clear the ball against northern ireland , missed it altogether and his boot was found up the shankill road . As odd howlers go that was the daddy.

  8. Dannybhoy says:

Actually the daftest thing he ever done was wearing jp2 t shirt.

  9. Billy Stark's Wig says:

Maybe slightly daft, or ill-advised, or whatever Danny but worthy of the uproar that ensued?

But what is ‘daft’ about paying tribute to a personal religious icon and fellow countryman on the anniversary of his passing? Or is it only an issue in this country, or with one team in particular?

  10. Billy Stark's Wig says:

    jaz,

Another one that gives me nightmares is the one where he fumbled and set it up nicely for Kenny “twelve touches” Misser to sclaff the ball home from all of six inches.

The good has far, far outweighed the bad however and the man is a Celtic legend whether he stays or he goes. (I feel a Clash tune coming on)

  11. WeKnowSFA says:

For balance cos the better moments as opposed to the brainwave moments of Boruc could easily be overlooked here:

    The Saha penalty save
The jazz-hands after the final Spartak penalty
His own penalty v Dundee United in the League Cup semi

His save this season at Easter Road (a ground where he quite frequently has a nightmare) was a phenomenal stop.

  12. Dannybhoy says:

BSW he was paying tribute to nobody he did it purely to wind up the Rangers fans, although i agree that people are a bit annal about Religion in the central belt area of Scotland which is a bit of a joke when you consider that most people who go on about it KNOWSFA about(not bad editor!!!)it .

  13. Billy Stark's Wig says:

    Assumptions Dannybhoy!

  14. Dublin bhoy says:

should keep him, he’s a quality keeper and they are very hard to come by
