Celtic and Rangers lead the SPL Match Day Against Hunger Weekend

High profile game will help raise awareness

For many people, there is a large amount of baggage surrounding Celtic v Rangers games but there is no doubt that the attention given to the game around the world is pretty large. It may not be at the level of top class English Premier League games but what happens in the big Glasgow clash does make people sit up and pay attention.

This isn’t always a good thing but this weekend at Celtic Park and 5 other SPL stadiums, attention will be drawn to the 1 Billion Hungry petition. More information can be found about this cause at: 1 Billion Hungry site

Speaking on behalf of the SPL, Neil Doncaster, Chief Executive of the league, said: “Our clubs do a great deal of work in their communities to help people here in Scotland.”

“But our clubs are well supported all across the world and this is a way we can do something for those less fortunate in other countries. We are keen to raise awareness of poverty to help tackle hunger and its causes.”

Some people feel there is no room for causes or political movements in sport whereas others feel sporting events are a great way of raising awareness about a cause. There’s never going to be agreement about extra-curricular things around a football match but we’d like to think that the battle against hunger is something that everyone can get behind.

This weekends SPL fixtures are as follows:

Sat 23rd October:
Aberdeen v Hibs
Hamilton v St Johnstone
Hearts v St Mirren
Kilmarnock v Inverness Caley Thistle
Motherwell v Dundee United

Sun 24th October:
Celtic v Rangers

This is a great idea hopefully it will stop certain supporters from being dumb enough to believe that clubs should continue to spend millions of pounds they dont have so that there clubs can win a trophy fucking rediculous.
This Article reminds me of the time i attended a game in the early 70s with my Dad & there were people outside collecting for a local business that looked like it was going to fold,my Dad gave one of the collectors a donation of 5 – 10 pounds a lot of money back then & the guy was very gratefull my Dad then said to me “ALWAYS BACK THE UNDERDOG SON” wise words.

Hmm. I worry the issue may be a little too close to home for some who like to sing about such things.

Linesman Craven who made the decision with McDonald to reverse the penalty decision has now retired from the game.

Lennon will face SFA punishment after all for last weeks ‘performance’ although only after the Police made a complaint, you would think calling the officials ‘cheats’ would have been at the forefront though.
