Celtic go top and just about please their fans

Joy for Mowbray as his team turn up at last.

This game was a complete non-event for the first half an hour but it came to life before half-time. After much and huffing and puffing, Celtic’s starting strike duo scored a similar goal each. Both finishes were well placed efforts from the right hand side of the box.

However, just when Celtic fans thought they may get to half-time in a relaxed manner, their defence imploded once again.

A number of silly mistakes were made but Marc Crosas made the biggest one, perfectly teeing the ball up for Michael Higdon to rifle home.

Danny Fox was having a first half which made Celtic fans yearn for the halcyon days of Lee Naylor. Ever since breaking into the Scottish squad, Fox has played….well, Fox has played like a Scottish internationalist, which is a shame after a strong start.

He was a bit stronger in the second half and was unlucky not to score with a stinging long range effort which Paul Gallacher palmed away to safety.

The clinching goal when an outstanding Gary Caldwell pass sent Aiden McGeady scurrying down the line, where his cross was turned home by the Australian striker for his second goal of the match.

Celtic could have added another goal at the end when they were awarded a penalty for a stupidly blatant hand-ball by Chris Innes. The game was delayed after referee Mike Conroy awarded a second yellow to the defender which saw him sent off.

However, Innes hadn’t been booked before this and after the player was in the tunnel, he was ordered back to the pitch and St Mirren finished the game with the full quota of men. This delay may have caused McDonald to have struck a poor penalty but the Aussie Striker missed his chance of a hat-trick.

You can’t blame a striker on two goals (even if some media outlets will take away his opening goal for a slight deflection) for wanting a late penalty to complete his hat-trick. Celtic need to sort out their penalty taking though, they have missed 2 penalties in their last three games.

So, Celtic go back to the top and their fans will be happy if not fully convinced.
