Dundee United boss Levein flavour of the month for SFA?

Is the Terrors boss the right candidate for the SFA?

Supposedly the SFA has a Gang of Five they want to speak to about the vacant Scotland manager’s position and one of them is Craig Levein. Dundee United have been asked for permission to speak to their boss and it is likely Levein will get the chance to hear what the SFA are proposing.

Arab takeovers have been all the rage in England but the Dundee United boss could lead an Arab takeover of the Scottish national team. And as our picture reveals, he is likely to have sympathy for Barry Ferguson and Alan McGregor.

BBC sources believe that United would be looking for compensation in excess of half a million pound if their manager is prised away from them but talks are very much at a preliminary stage.

Levein will know the way to Hampden but he will probably make a wrong turn and head for the disciplinary room.

Craig Levein seems to be flavour of the month, a lot stemming from the time he put Mike McCurry in his place. Yes, McCurry may now be Ali Bongo for a living but there was a time when he was as deft at cheating teams as he was at allegedly cheating on his wife in various car parks around the South side of Glasgow.

Being outspoken and standing up to a few of Scottish football’s sacred cows has warmed many neutrals to Levein but is he really the best man for the job?

United are praised, their team can hassle and harry the big two as well as anyone else but their end product isn’t good enough. Finishes lower than Jimmy Calderwood for two seasons in a row or finishing below Mark McGhee in the 2007-08 season suggest that Levein has still got a lot to improve.

Also, after the McLeish fiasco, Scotland may be better off going for an older hand, one who would be swayed less by job offers. Okay, Walter Smith proves that idea to not be completely fool-proof but there were mitigating circumstances in his Hampden walk-out.

Did anyone say the mitigating circumstances are that Smith is a big traitor who abandoned his country? Fair enough to Walter Smith for making that decision though, most Celtic and Rangers fans in the same position would do the same.

Levein probably acknowledges the fact that the time may be too soon for him to leave club management and move into the international game but if you miss your chance, will it ever come around again?

“I 100% want to be the Scottish manager. Whether that’s now or later, I couldn’t tell you for sure.”

As news starts to filter through about the rest of the candidates for the Scotland job, it will become easier to rank Levein alongside his rivals but at the moment, he is definitely one of the major contenders for the post.

Would Levein be your choice for Scotland boss?
