Hibs sail through in Scottish Cup

Montrose pose no threat to the Hibees

Two first half Colin Nish goals put Hibs on the road to the 6th Round of the Active Nation Scottish Cup, with Montrose offering little resistance to the Leith club.

The cup draw has been kind to Hibs so far, home ties against Irvine Meadow and Montrose are the games clubs dream of getting and John Hughes’ side have taken full advantage. Hibs fans will tell you that the Scottish Cup and luck are not things that go hand in hand but just maybe, 2010 could be the year that changes.

Of course, it just takes one off day for everything to come to a shuddering halt so the Hibs fans won’t be getting carried away just yet but there is the potential for positive news.

There had barely been five minutes of play at Easter Road when Colin Nish fired home the rebound from a Derek Riordan shot to put the home side 1 up. The same player doubled Hibs advantage producing a sweet finish from a John Rankin ball.

There was no more scoring in the first half but Hibs looked to be home and hosed with 45 minutes remaining.

Riordan scored another special goal to put Hibs 3-0 up but Montrose gave their fans something to cheer when Chris Hegarty scored from outside the box. The player picked up a booking for his celebrations once again bringing up the question do refs need to be so strict about this type of situation?

The regulations are not so strict to say that every celebration of this manner is a bookable offence and all football fans can point to similar celebrations where yellow cards have not been produced. Much like kicking the ball away or time-wasting, the decision of the ref can be very much a personal one as opposed to a universal one.

It is unlikely the booking will take the shine off Hegarty’s moment, or make it any less watchable when he records the Sportscene highlights tonight but depending on his club’s disciplinary code, it could cost the player!

And just in case any Montrose fan thought the comeback was on, Benji struck for Hibs to restore the three goal lead with debutant Alan Gow rounding things off in style for Hibs, making it 5-1 at the final whistle.

Can Hibs make it to Hampden?
