Motherwell show Dundee United who is best of the rest
In a one off game and with a slice of luck that is!
For fans outside of the big two, who get the chance to knock lumps out of each other, grabbing third place is an important issue in the SPL and being best of the rest is a position worth fighting for.
Dundee United were easily the best of the rest last season but many teams have found it difficult to hold onto this spot.
Motherwell had a great run in the second half of last season and Craig Brown’s boys have started this season in similar fashion. This sees them in third place and after this victory, 5 points clear of their Tannadice rivals.
Motherwell were handed the perfect start from their guests as the ball rebounded off Scott Severin to make it 1-0 with many fans still taking their seat. Dusan Pernis has blocked a shot from Jamie Murphy but the luck was with this hosts.
United fans must have been howling with laughter when they were “handed” the opportunity to get back into the match. It was less than a week when ago when United were beating the Harlem Globetrotters at their game with a number of handball blocks in their own box but they were given the decision at Fir Park.
David Goodwillie continued his impressive goalscoring form when he stuck the ball past Randolph to make the score 1-1 and left the United fans praying for a late winner to go in their favour this weekend.
A Dundee United player did grab the winning goal but like the opener, it was an own goal which put Motherwell back into the lead again. Sean Dillon converted Chris Humphrey’s cross behind Dusan Pernis and left United with too much to do to get back into it.
Two defeats on the spin has halted Dundee United’s good return to form and see the club in 7th place behind St Johnstone. In contrast, Motherwell are sitting in third place and are as good a bet as any club to grab the best of the rest of the title in the SPL.
