Naismith gives Rangers fans an early Christmas present
Contract extension until 2015

Rangers fans are probably still chuckling away at Celtic fans in the freezing cold last night watching their team chuck away another two points but they’ve another reason to smile this morning. One of the player’s best performers this season, Steven Naismith, has signed a contract extension keeping him at Ibrox until 2015.
On first thoughts, signing a deal keeping him with Rangers until a quarter past eight doesn’t seem like a great deal but of course, it refers to the year and not the twenty four hour clock. So…first crap joke of the Crimbo season over and done with and it has to be said it’s good business for Rangers.
Naismith has been rewarded for strong performances which is exactly the sort of message you want to send out to a dressing room. We all know Rangers are in financial dire straits and are relying on their youth squad more and more and this sort of incentivisation can really push on youngsters. The game has changed at Ibrox and developing players know they will get a chance. It is easy to forget that Naismith is still only 24 and has the potential to be a major player for club and country for many years to come.
There has been no further news on contract talks with Kenny Miller or Sasa Papac but it makes sense for Rangers to try and commit to keeping the players they have. Papac may not be the dazzling star of the team but his reliability ensures he is a first-pick for Smith whenever he is available. Having a player who will always deliver a performance based on what he is told to do is hugely important in the modern game and Walter Smith’s successor will benefit from having Papac remain at the club.
With the number one spot at Christmas guaranteed and now Steven Naismith hanging around for longer, things are looking bright for Rangers fans.
