Pressley won’t bring the Hawthorne effect to Falkirk

Not quite the new man in charge

WeKnowSFA - Falkirk

With the amount of new managers being installed in the SPL, there has been a lot of talk about the impact that a new man can have on a club. Motherwell manager Craig Brown brought the Hawthorne effect to the attention of some people and the same can be said for Jimmy Calderwood at Kilmarnock.

However, Pressley has moved up from within at Falkirk so the situation is slightly different. A more relative comparison can be made with Peter Houston at Dundee United who has stepped up to replace Craig Levein at Tannadice.

Houston was said to have been interested in the managers job on a permanent basis but the initial stages did not look good. Dropped points and losing 7 goals at Ibrox seemed to rule out Houston and he was honest enough to say that possibly he was too close to the players to provide any fresh impetus to the club.

That said, since the early storm, Dundee United have bounced back with a good run of form, ably assisted by the goals of David Goodwillie.

At the moment, Kilmarnock, Motherwell and Dundee United have all improved their position with bringing in a new man and of course Hearts got their first win under returning boss Jim Jefferies against Pressley’s Falkirk yesterday.

Falkirk play Aberdeen, Dundee United and Celtic in their next three matches but with two draws against the hoops already, that may not be a tricky tie for Falkirk. After that though is a run of games that will likely define their season.

Home to St Johnstone, away to Hamilton and then away to St Johnstone provide a chance of 9 points being up for grabs and Falkirk have to come away with the lions share of these points if they want to remain in the SPL.

The SPL split has its critics but it does make for an exciting end to the season and any team in the bottom 6 will think they can pick up the points after the split. Pressley needs to have a positive impact in the Falkirk dressing room or it will be bye bye SPL.

Can Pressley keep them up?
