Rangers must build from the back versus Bursaspor

Cautious approach for the best for the Blues

Rangers opponents Bursaspor have revealed that they will not wear a green and white hooped jersey at the game tonight, which is probably a shame for Rangers fans. After all, it’s been a while since a team wearing that strip has won at Ibrox and Walter Smith usually does alright when it comes to the crunch against the hoops.

All of that is a mere sideshow to the proper on-field action and for all the posturing by Smith pre-match, Rangers should be considered as favourites for the game.

The impact that last seasons Champions League campaign will have on the line-up tonight at Ibrox will be resolved this evening but it would not be a surprise to see a more cautious approach by Rangers. You would think the Glasgow side will still be aiming to win and grab all three points but this can be done whilst keeping the defence tight as well.

The news that Steven Davis has passed a fitness test should be considered good news as the Irishman will be pivotal in Rangers successfully creating chances tonight. Davis has not exactly hit the heights this season so far, even being outshone by Lee McCulloch but on the big occasion, you look to your big players to perform.

When it comes to big players, no one is bigger for Rangers at the moment than Kenny Miller. 10 league goals already suggest the striker is in the form of his life but will of course be performing without Jelavic alongside him tonight. If Rangers go for the 4-5-1 with midfielders pressing forward, Miller is the striker you would choose for that role so regardless of how adventurous Rangers are, Miller will be the main man up front.

We’re not going to lie and say we know too much about Rangers Turkish opponents, nor are we going to throw in a lot of last minute research but they are unbeaten in their league campaign so far and will be looking to bounce back from an opening day CL defeat from Valencia.

On paper, it is the easiest match Rangers will have in their group but one only needs to think back to last season to know that is not always a good thing.

We fully expect Rangers to be dominant tonight without pressing continuously throughout the game….a narrow home win would appear to be the most likely of options.

What do you predict for tonight?

Any victory would be sweet, they are no mugs though. One of the top spenders in Europe this year, champions of the Turkish League and currently sitting top this campaign.

It will be hard but for the good of the Scottish game, we need to win and boost the co-efficient which is very low at present.

    Heading off soon!
