Boyd chokes in a big game again
Walter Smith has had a torrid time in Aberdeen since his return to Rangers but today’s defeat must smart. Rangers were facing an Aberdeen who were under-strength from the first whistle and who played with 10 men for the final third of the match.
Kyle Lafferty had a horrendous miss in the first but Kris Boyd, so often the saviour for the Light Blues will look back on a handful of fluffed chances. Boyd earned his first Champions League start during the week but a poor performance led many to state the point that Boyd can only score against the small clubs.
This was shown yet again as the striker failed to produce the goods in a match against a team generally considered in the top 6. Boyd can always score against Hamilton, Kilmarnock and St Mirren but when games are tight and vital, the Ayrshire striker cannot be relied upon.
Lee Miller doesn’t hit the back of the net with the frequency of Boyd but he can give defences a torrid time with his strength and mobility. Just past the 15 minute mark, Miller managed to evade the Rangers defence to glance the ball past Alan McGregor.
It turned out to be the winner.
Understandably, Aberdeen boss Mark McGhee was delighted with his teams performance and all three points. The Dons remain in sixth place but they now sit three points behind Motherwell and just the seven points behind second placed Rangers.
Rangers away form in the SPL has been anything but impressive.
5 league matches away from Ibrox this season has resulted in two wins, two draws and now a defeat. It should be remembered that one of the away victories came through a late and highly dubious penalty at Tynecastle.
The other away win came at McDiarmid Park, home of promoted team St Johnstone, where a late Sasa Papac strike earned three points for the champions. The home form in the Champions League has been the downfall for Rangers but if this continues in the SPL, it could be the end of their title defence.
