Rangers lay a marker for league and cup

No stopping the SPL champions

Lee McCulloch was not fit enough to get involved for Scotland in midweek but there was nothing wrong with the midfielder at Ibrox today. Two goals saw Rangers turn a 1-0 deficit into a lead which eventually saw the SPL champions move 13 points clear.

Yep, unlucky for the chasing pack and definitely unlucky for Celtic but Rangers fans will say there is no luck involved.

Rangers did get a slice of good fortune in the opening moments when a different view may have been made of Davie Weir’s halting of Michael Higdon. The grab was outside the box so the decision to award a free-kick was spot on but for Weir to avoid a booking, when a red could have been given, have the home side a bit of good fortune.

A free-kick did see them fall behind though and it was on-loan Celtic man Graham Carey that silence Ibrox. The movement on the strike was enough to see the ball fly past McGregor into the Rangers net.

As is so often the case though, if Rangers are behind, they don’t stay behind for long. St Mirren would have been looking to get to half time ahead but they barely saw out two minutes when McCulloch fired home to put the champions back level.

Less than two minutes into the second half, McCulloch volleyed home his second of the game and with a lead, it was unlikely that Rangers would give their opponents another chance. In fact, DaBeasley should have added to the blues lead.

The matches between the sides have been close this season but some daylight was brought about with Nacho Novo’s goal, making it 3-1 with minutes to go. The Spaniard snuck in at the back post to seal the three points and keep the Rangers bandwagon rolling.

There isn’t much to add about Rangers dominance in the SPL this season and the procession to the title shows no sign of faltering.

Can Rangers tie it up before the split?

Gonny do an Arsene Wenger here, I never saw the Weir incident as I was late in getting into the game.

Thought St Mirrens goal was deflected as well, beer goggles!!

Rangers are a strong willed, determined bunch and when the equaliser went in, there wasn’t any doubt as to who the winner would be.

Should Rangers beat an in form Kilmarnock on Tuesday, the SPL title will be won, 13 points clear with 10 games left (plus the mammoth goal difference) will see them through.

We’ve had the benefit of internet replays – as you say, 4th minute so early doors, could have influenced any decision made.

Some will say it was good and experienced defending by Weir – lets face it, he knows what he is doing – again, all about perceptions. And again, no doubts or any complaints about Rangers getting all three points.

It may be more than 13 after Kilmarnock – with two draws between them this season, there is no way Celtic can be totally confident of grabbing all three points at the Falkirk Stadium.

But Rangers have yet again did their part and put the pressure back onto Celtic.
