The link between Celtic and Ireland is undoubtedly strong and is used by backers and detractors of the club in any of their argument. We’re not going to waste time trying to analyse that today but there is no doubt that Celtic have short-changed some of their Irish fans in recent years.

It isn’t that far between Glasgow and Ireland so fans can always make it to Celtic Park to see the first team but this is not always an option. Celtic have regularly sent teams to Ireland in recent years but more often than not, these teams have featured youngsters and players that all but the keen fans will have heard of.

Squad players need to get a game so that isn’t a problem but all too often, the Irish fans have been charged a full price for the privilege of these games and many have had enough of being taken for granted.

This is why it was good to see as strong a Celtic team as possible being played in Ireland for the game between Bohemians and Celtic. The starting line-up for Celtic was:
Zaluska, Towell, Twardzik, Wilson, Hooiveld, Loovens, Crosas, Jaurez, Murphy, Stokes, Hooper

That is not far off a team that could take the field for Celtic and certainly the inclusion of Stokes and Hooper up-front would have been of particular interest. The more games this pairing can get together has to be good for the club.

Hooper opened the scoring and Daryl Murphy made it 2-0 to Celtic before the half-time break. The third goal came from Towell before a late flurry of goals made it 4-1.

Bohemians pulled a goal back at 3-1 but Celtic wasted no time in grabbing another with Murphy notching his second of the match.

Friendly results are not of any importance but a run-out for players isn’t a bad thing and with many Celtic players being on international duty, Neil Lennon wouldn’t have got too many tactical plans worked on this week.

As long as no new injuries have been picked up, it may have been a rather worthwhile trip for Celtic.
