RFC in advanced negotiations to buy Rangers

Stock Exchange release breaks the story

The sublime Super Furry Animals had a lyric that ran “table tennis rules, they’re so confusing it’s not played by fools” in the tremendous ‘Ice Hockey Hair’ but if you think that’s tricky, what about the rules of the Stock Exchange?

This is not something that most Scottish football fans will keep on top of but when it comes to the future of one of the biggest clubs in the country, interest starts to pick up.

The soa opera about who will buy Rangers has ran on for far longer than the Celtic appointing Neil Lennon story and Rangers have already had a rap on the knuckles for making public comments regarding a potential takeover.

This time though, the RFC consortium released a statement to the Stock Exchange stating that they are in “advanced negotiations” to take over the Ibrox side. Only earlier today, Tom English reported that Rangers were more likely to be taken off the market than sold but this latest announcement, whilst no guarantee of a sale, does suggest there is still a strong chance of the club being sold.

With the threat of the HMRC investigation hanging over the club, you would think that any potential buyer has completed due diligence and made themselves aware of what their liabilities could be if a case goes against Rangers. This isn’t to say that fans should read too much into things at the moment but no doubt people who understand the financial markets will have their own opinion on the likelihood of the sale going through.

The talk at the moment is of Rangers debt being wiped out but any Gers fan that watched the Panorama special on Manchester United and the Glazers may be a little bit uneasy about that sort of talk. If the backers are going to borrow funds to buy Rangers, where will they service their borrowing from?
This may not be the situation at all but after last nights show, it is obviously a question that will be on many people’s minds.

Without knowing much more at the moment, there is no point in getting carried away but it certainly seems the most advanced situation with respect to selling Rangers.

Gers fans, happy if this goes through?

Early June and Sean believes the league us already tied up for next season – you wonder who’ll be the first Rangers fan to request that the club ensures they are wearing their spiky golf shoes!

With respect to club stadiums and Uefa ratings – the 5 star rankings are no longer valid and don’t count but in Scotland, it doesn’t matter anyway, there is no way the SFA would sanction a hosting application from any stadium apart from Hampden – too much money to be made.

And in the space of a few hours….

Today’s Scottish media appear to be rubbishing the hopes of a Rangers takeover being completed anytime soon.

We can’t recall which paper is in which camp but with The Sun and Daily Record both doubting a quick sale – it could drag on and on. Tom English may have called it right!

Best stadium? You got the money to fix your big TV screens yet?

Am glad Rangers sorted out their tax problems so they cou… what’s that you say? £51m? wow.

It’s a strange statement for RFC Holdings to make unless they believe that it’s very close to being a done deal. To be honest, the tabloid and mainstream written media know very little about any of the deal and in most cases are adding two and two together and coming up with their own slanted answer.

Informed sources suggest that Chris Akers and Andrew Ellis will be in charge before the new season starts, what we know about them at this stage amounts to the same amount of space within the Parkhead trophy cabinet!!

I’ll wait until the rubber stamp appears on the end of this very long story.
