Saints stopper aims to be super singer songwriter
Top of the league or top of the charts?

Young boys (well, all males) dream of being a footballer or a rock star…but very few manage to achieve one of these dreams. Therefore, any person that manages to achieve both has to be looked at very favourably.
Fans and punters everywhere are looking forward to the kick-off of the football season but St Johnstone defender Kevin Rutkiewicz has a little bit more than football on his mind.
On the 6th of August, Rutkiewicz releases his debut album ‘Handwritten’ and the defender is hoping that the timing of the release will catch the football fever that sweeps the nation! Have a listen to Kev here:
Whilst we back Kevin for having the balls to get up and do this, we have to say that his music is not the sort of thing that will get our night kicking off. One of the curses of living in Glasgow and liking music and a drink means we have more than had our fill of solo singer-songwriters with an acoustic guitar and a tortured soul.
If your idea of great music reaches its limits with Paolo Nutini or Ocean Colour Scene, then absolutely fill your boots here but it may well be that you’ve heard it all before. As we said, that’s not to deride Kev, it’s all just a matter of what music you like to listen to.
Given what we’ve said about the many singer songwriters around, it’s probably no surprise to find that Rutkiewicz is not the only Scottish born footballer that dabbles with performing. Ex Celtic, Dundee United and Motherwell player Jim O’Brien has also been known to dabble with the six strings and his style is definitely very influenced by that Paisley singer who bothers the upper reaches of the chart.
However, with an album all set to go, the St Johnstone defender is one up on the Barnsley winger.
There is Youtube footage of Kevin covering an Ocean Colour Scene song, which shows where his influence is drawn from but we think he would do well to mix it up a little bit. You could just imagine his local crowd going mental if he dropped in a cheeky cover from a retro starlet like Cathy Dennis or Belinda Carlisle.
After all, Heaven is a place in Perth!
