Scottish football loses another sponsor

by WeKnowSFA

Will there be a replacement for the League Cup?

We’re as guilty as anyone of deriding the League Cup, heck, we even used the term “diddy cup†in our round-ups last week but it has to be said that the cup is losing some of its lustre.

As part of the treble it remains a charm for Celtic and Rangers fans but without it, it seems an inconvenience. Fans of other teams also fail to get behind the tournament leaving it in limbo…nowhere near as popular or as illustrious as the Scottish Cup.

Anyone with even a cursory awareness of Scottish football history will be aware of the League Cup group sections that used to kick-start the season. The WeKnowSFA team are just a tad too young to have made any of they games but the arrival of the “one-match knock-out decided on the evening†format took over, it definitely brought some life to the tournament.

A change can often be as good as a rest and the new format certainly gave the League Cup a shot in the arm.

Times are very different now and it’s hard to see what would take for the average Scottish football fan to fall back in love with the League Cup. Some suggestions of being forced to pick a certain amount of young players has been suggested and would certainly level the playing field whilst giving some much needed first team exposure to younger players.

Whatever faces the League Cup, the Co-Operative Insurance will no longer be the main sponsor of the tournament. The company has announced that their sponsorship of the trophy will not extend beyond the current deal, which expires at the end of the season.

The company were at pains to stress that the recent no-shows from some clubs at the quarter-final draw had no impact on their decision…but it couldn’t have helped. For a major draw, the fact that Rangers, Motherwell, Dundee United and Falkirk decided not to send anyone to the draw was a farce and all four clubs should be embarrassed at their actions.

Sending players to these events can be troublesome during the season but some representative of the club, even a former player, should have been put forward to aid the sponsors gain exposure. Or then again….perhaps the non-appearance of these clubs has gained more column inches for the Co-Operative Insurance than a full turn-out could have managed.

It is not so long ago that the Scottish Cup was without a sponsor but that was all the fault of the incompetent Gordon Smith and thankfully he has nothing to do with the pursuit of a new sponsor for the League Cup.

Is this a major worry for Scottish football or just one of those things?
