Scottish refs have a cheek with strike threat
Games off next weekend?
A man walks into a bar says….
Aye, alright, we’re not the world’s greatest joke tellers at WeKnowSFA so we’ll leave the rib-tickers to the BBC and the SFA.
“BBC Scotland has learned that officials are concerned that their integrity is constantly being questionedâ€
The fact that it has been proven that a referee has told lies to a club manager this season, that the referees manager told the same lie to the media the following night and the press officer at Hampden Park spread lies about the reasons why Steven Craven wanted to resign….its not as if the integrity of refs and the SFA is in question. Everyone knows they have no integrity left.
Scottish refs previously threatened to strike in 2008 over demanding increased pay for their part-time hobby but the strike threat was averted when a pay increase was offered to them. There has been no improvement in quality of performance so you would think that the paymasters would be looking for some money back.
Both Hearts and Celtic have went public with criticism of officials this season and off the top of our head, we can think of a time when every SPL boss (bar Danny Lennon or Colin Calderwood) has made criticism of officials. We’re not saying Danny Lennon is an angel but we never paid too much attention to his remarks when he was at Cowdenbeath…sorry Danny! and we had no interest in the lower reaches of the English League where Calderwood was building his reputation before coming to Easter Road.
So, it appears if the incompetent men in the middle get their way, there will be no football action in Scotland next weekend. This will be letting down a lot of people, costing a lot of clubs money and harming the game in the eyes of the sponsors and TV cameras.
Players and managers are criticised when they get things wrong and with referees now consistently making game changing decisions, they should not be above criticism.
There is a need for big change at the SFA, there is need for transparency and the SFA needs to learn that respect is a two way thing…merely demanding respect will not bring about respect, it has to be earned.
If the referees feel so strongly about this, they should talk together with their union and determine their plan of action.
That’s the right of any worker and not one we would argue with the refs considering. However, before the refs and the SFA start blaming everyone else, it would be of considerable benefit if they started putting their house in order.
It’s not a pro-any club issue, it’s not an anti-anyone agenda but the standard of refereeing in Scotland is at an extremely poor level and the idea of refs attempting to argue they have integrity at the moment is quite concerning.
Is this a warning shot or are the refs set to bring football to a halt next weekend?

The referee’s have been under enormous pressure from one club in particular, Celtic. The lastest in their long standing fued with authority, only this time they have went too far. When the war mongerer Baron Reid of Cardowan starts lecturing us on morality well you know the games up. The very same parasite that claimed for toilet roll holders and bar tips in his expenses account that he had to pay back.
Yes old flakey heid has a cheek as has the entire board of directors when it comes to being economical with the truth, anyone remember the end of season trip to Japan? How did that go?
The referee’s might not be the best, but to question their collective integrity is a step too far and I back their decision 100%
Quagmire, Celtic’s end of season trip to Japan did not happen as the SPL extended the league to accommodate Rangers request, who as you will be well aware had a fixture pile-up for a combination of reasons.
With respect that’s pish, that tour was never going to happen and I remeber Lawell spouting ‘sporting integrity’. Where’s his integrity when he came out with his statement at the recent AGM?
“We hope that the pressure we have correctly placed on SFA will pay dividend”
Well it has and to what cost to our game with their shameful antics.
You don’t know the ins and outs Quags, Celtic may have been looking into an end of season match in Japan which they had to cancel as the SPL extended the season beyond the stated end date. Or they may not. With regards to that season and the way the run-in was laid out, a lot of people need to look at their “integrity”, not just Celtic.
However, it is known that officials and the refereeing chief and the head of spin at the SFA have lied this season – that is pretty inexcusable – its quite sad that this issue has become another stick for people to beat Celtic with. We’ve all agreed on this site that there is a huge need for change and transparency within the SFA…perhaps if only someone other than Celtic pushed for it.
Thing is though Ed, there are ways and means in which to do this. Regan spoke to the Celtic board and assured them of change and to let him sort it out to which they agreed. One week later and we have Hoopers inexcusable comments about Referee’s, then Lennons histirionics at Tynecastle followed up by the nonsense at the AGM.
Had Celtic gone about their business in the proper fashion I’m sure there would be a groundswell of support for them, but they lost all credibility with there actions in recent days.
Change and transparency is required within the game, the bulldozer approach by Celtic can’t and won’t work.
Hooper’s not the brightest lad and the media were gunning for him. There could have been a bit more intelligence in putting someone else in front of the press pack….but the questions put to the striker were fairly loaded.
Lennon is being dealt with for his histrionics at Tynecastle, which may see him suspended for 4 matches – quite a large ban for a manager on his first offence. If there is proof that Lennon’s remarks to Thomson and fourth official were out of line then fair enough, 4 match ban it is. However, there doesn’t appear to be any movement to deal with Craig Thomson for an highly questionable ‘non-penalty’ decision in the same match….this accountability, integrity and respect only going one way again…
With regards to the AGM comments, Celtic have a duty to act in the interests of their shareholders, who were gathered for the AGM. Many of these shareholders were asking questions about what the club were doing in their on-going differences with the SFA.
The press conference featuring your good pal Dr Reid (or the blood on his hands warmonger (copyright Green Brigade)) was probably the first thing of positive note that Reid has managed in his spell at Celtic. Certainly a lot less embarrassing than his “holy willies” remark. As for Lawwells comments about pressure – could have / should have been worded better but given that refs have admitted telling lies to the Celtic manager – cant see what else Celtic are supposed to have done. The SFA have played every move in the media and public arena…Celtic have merely responded.
Much in the same way that Martin Bain went public about his letters to the SFA and going to war with them.
