Smog nearly derailed Celtic’s sale of McGeady to Moscow
That Bill Callahan is a bloody rascal

âI had to leave the country
Although there were some nice folk there
And now I donât know where Iâm going
But what I do know is Iâll hit the ground runningâ
The lyrics above may be similar to the words running around the mind of Aiden McGeady as he ponders over the move to Spartak Moscow, which could do very well for him on a financial level.
You can imagine our surprise this morning at reading one of the tabloids stating that Smog may have put the Irish internationalistâs move at risk. Smog are one of our favourite bands and what impact could they really have on McGeady moving away…after all, itâs not as if they are the sort of music that would feature on the Karbon playlist.
Then we gave it some thought and a lot of Bill Callahanâs lyrics may have played a part in the decision made by Aiden.
In the track âMoralityâ, a Bill Callahan solo track as opposed to a Smog song, Bill ponders on âWhat would my wife say….if I was married?â
Given that Aiden took his girlfriend over to Moscow with him, there is no doubt that the impact the move will have on those close to him has to be factor in the decision made.
One of the first things that many will think about with regards to Moscow and Russia will be the weather and the winter can be fairly bleak. The Russians have a reasonably lengthy break during the winter period so it is not as if McGeady will be expected to play much football during this period but whether it will make for a happy living experience is an entirely different matter.
With any luck, the winger can get some time in sunnier climes during the break to offset some of the Russian winter but there is no doubt that it can be too cold to snow at certain times of year.
There is no doubt an upside and a downside to Aiden McGeady moving away from Scotland to Russia but even the wingerâs biggest fans would have to admit there has been a natural decline in his game in recent times. He certainly hasnât been helped with the diminishing quality of players around him and you feel as though Aiden McGeady needs to get out of his comfort zone to allow him to be the player he potentially could be.
Not only that but Celtic really need the proceeds from the sale to transform the team and give Neil Lennon a fair chance of taking the title back. At the moment, Rangers could fall down to a squad of nine players and you would still fancy their chances of hurting the Celtic backline.
A new goalkeeper, centre half and left back may not get punters off their seats in anticipation the way that Aiden McGeady managed to do but they will help make Celtic a much tougher team to beat. And you only have to look at Rangers to realise that being difficult to beat is a huge factor in winning the SPL.
So….it appears that despite all of Bill Callahanâs best efforts, Aiden McGeady is set to leave Scotland and perhaps attempt to light up the Russian league. He will be missed (by some, others will miss the opportunity to boo him and others wont be fussed at all) but Aiden McGeadyâs exit from Celtic Park could be the factor that allows Neil Lennon to revamp his defence.
Or it could be the sale of the last of the family jewels.
Do you think Aiden McGeady can be A HIT in Russia?

Thank you for the smog songs, id never heard of them but i like. I think McGeady will love Moscow, but dont know why he is taking the girlfriend?! The russian girls are painfully good looking… whilst the brums are just painfull to look at.
he’s pish see yi.
Aye wee twinkle toes is shite, good bye and a piece of advice for ya, practice your crossing as that’s something you’re sorely bad at for a winger!
Rumours running rife that Martin O’Neil has quit Aston Villa. I’m sure if he had tipped off Dermot Desmond he would have been back at the Celtic Park hotseat by now.
I’m not one to fall for values attached to the sale of players as I reckon there’s a lot of subterfuge when it comes to this subject. But christ on a bike, if McGeady is worth ÂŁ10M then I’m a Dutchman.
Phenomenal piece of business for Celtic if he goes, obviously the Rushkies have more money than sense.
And btw, O’Neil has indeed left the Villa.

Players are only worth what clubs are willing to pay for them. Look at some of the crazy transfers in England over the years. Now give Lenny (and Martin!) the money pronto.
Aiden McGeady has now been officially unveiled by Spartak Moscow for a few being reported between ÂŁ9 & ÂŁ10 million.
