Smog nearly derailed Celtic’s sale of McGeady to Moscow

That Bill Callahan is a bloody rascal

“I had to leave the country
Although there were some nice folk there
And now I don’t know where I’m going
But what I do know is I’ll hit the ground running”

The lyrics above may be similar to the words running around the mind of Aiden McGeady as he ponders over the move to Spartak Moscow, which could do very well for him on a financial level.

You can imagine our surprise this morning at reading one of the tabloids stating that Smog may have put the Irish internationalist’s move at risk. Smog are one of our favourite bands and what impact could they really have on McGeady moving away…after all, it’s not as if they are the sort of music that would feature on the Karbon playlist.

Then we gave it some thought and a lot of Bill Callahan’s lyrics may have played a part in the decision made by Aiden.

In the track ‘Morality’, a Bill Callahan solo track as opposed to a Smog song, Bill ponders on “What would my wife say….if I was married?”

Given that Aiden took his girlfriend over to Moscow with him, there is no doubt that the impact the move will have on those close to him has to be factor in the decision made.

One of the first things that many will think about with regards to Moscow and Russia will be the weather and the winter can be fairly bleak. The Russians have a reasonably lengthy break during the winter period so it is not as if McGeady will be expected to play much football during this period but whether it will make for a happy living experience is an entirely different matter.

With any luck, the winger can get some time in sunnier climes during the break to offset some of the Russian winter but there is no doubt that it can be too cold to snow at certain times of year.

There is no doubt an upside and a downside to Aiden McGeady moving away from Scotland to Russia but even the winger’s biggest fans would have to admit there has been a natural decline in his game in recent times. He certainly hasn’t been helped with the diminishing quality of players around him and you feel as though Aiden McGeady needs to get out of his comfort zone to allow him to be the player he potentially could be.

Not only that but Celtic really need the proceeds from the sale to transform the team and give Neil Lennon a fair chance of taking the title back. At the moment, Rangers could fall down to a squad of nine players and you would still fancy their chances of hurting the Celtic backline.

A new goalkeeper, centre half and left back may not get punters off their seats in anticipation the way that Aiden McGeady managed to do but they will help make Celtic a much tougher team to beat. And you only have to look at Rangers to realise that being difficult to beat is a huge factor in winning the SPL.

So….it appears that despite all of Bill Callahan’s best efforts, Aiden McGeady is set to leave Scotland and perhaps attempt to light up the Russian league. He will be missed (by some, others will miss the opportunity to boo him and others wont be fussed at all) but Aiden McGeady’s exit from Celtic Park could be the factor that allows Neil Lennon to revamp his defence.

Or it could be the sale of the last of the family jewels.

Do you think Aiden McGeady can be A HIT in Russia?
