This wasn’t meant to be a play-off
And just when you thought you could start ticking off all the teams who had qualified for the 2010 World Cup, something happens which throws you off course.
Nigeria and Cameroon booked their passage to South Africa but Group Three in the African qualification stages has thrown up a rather intriguing outcome. Going into the final round of fixtures, Algeria and Egypt both knew that their destiny was in their own hands.
Algeria topped the group with 13 points, and a goal difference of 7, brought about from 9 goals scored for the loss of 2. Egypt were three points behind on 10, with a goal difference of 3, with 7 goals scored and the loss of 4.
The match between the two teams was taking place in Egypt but this was the only real advantage that the home side had. Any win or draw for Algeria would be enough to see them qualified for the World Cup. A 1 goal win for Egypt would see them teams level on points but Algeria would qualify on goal difference. A 3 or higher goal victory for Egypt would see them qualify with Algeria falling into second. A two goal victory for Egypt would force a play-off as the two teams would be level on goals scored and goals against.

Yes, a 2-0 victory for Egypt ensured that the African qualification process couldn’t be tied up just yet; making for one exciting evening when these teams clash in a winner takes all meeting.
It will be interesting to see how the psychology of this tie plays out.
Will Egypt be buoyed by the fact that their qualification hopes have been kept alive and the knowledge they can beat Algeria confidently dispose of their opponents?
Will Algeria be relieved to still have a chance of qualification and take their second opportunity to book a place in South Africa?
Or will nerves take a hold of both teams and make them both play as though there is so much more to lose as opposed to gain?
No one wants to be so close to a World Cup and then not make it so it is understandable if both teams are cautious in the opening period of the play-off game. The atmosphere in the stadium will be electric and whoever wins is in line for a celebration party that will go on for days.
